Kutztown University Clinical Services will host an Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide awareness and prevention on Sunday, April 17, 2016, from 5 – 7 p.m. The walk will take place on the DMZ on the south campus of Kutztown University. This area is located between Berks Hall and Deatrick Hall and the South Dining Hall. Proceeds will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
Walkers will join the effort of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
According to the American Center for Disease Control, in 2014, the second leading cause of death for Americans ages 10-34 was suicide. The AFSP, the leader in the fight against suicide, funds research, creates educational programs, advocates for public policy and supports survivors of suicide loss. Headquartered in New York, AFSP has 75 local chapters including one in the Greater Lehigh Valley. They look to reduce the annual suicide rate by 20 percent by 2025.
